Rio was our first Mustang, who was a rescue from someone that had nine other horses, none of which were Mustangs. As is the case in many instances, the Mustang often finds himself or herself separated from other domestic horses once in captivity due to the ignorance of people.

Rio is a dapple grey Mustang, approximately 14.1 (14.2 with good posture) hands tall and weighs approximately 800-850 pounds. He is 15 years old. While small in stature, he is huge in heart! His hooves are incredibly large, as is typical of Mustangs and are as strong as steel. Mustangs do not require shoeing due to our climate, because the ground is so tough, which keeps their hooves looking like a farrier trimmed them!

We have had Rio now for over 5 years at the Funny Farm. He is the perfect ambassador for Mustangs, especially to the gentleness, intelligence and loyalty they constantly display. During his training, we were always incredibly surprised at how fast he understood what we were asking of him and he never let’s us down. We have folks from all over come to the Funny Farm to see Rio and there are many pictures of him with kids sitting on him and having fun.

His trail riding ability is incredible. We are fortunate to be close to several wild horse bands within a 50-mile radius and we frequently take him and another Mustang named George, out to the desert and ride amongst the wild horses.
